Books Arrive with the Wind: A Delivery to La Madera
On a day marked by simplicity, effort, and a shared commitment to literacy, the Kreskanta Foundation—through its "Books for All" program—delivered a collection of books and a small bookshelf to the community of La Madera in the municipality of Torotoro. Though modest in scale, this delivery was rich in symbolism, gratitude, and heartfelt emotion.
The journey was made on foot, with the help of a donkey kindly provided by a community member to carry the bookshelf and books. While the distance was short, the path—like so many in this Andean region—was challenging. It served as a reminder that children traverse this route daily to reach school, undeterred by sun, cold, or rain.
At the school, we were welcomed by Professor Juan and his colleagues, whose admirable dedication guides their students through learning despite material limitations. In their humble classroom, the children thrive with enthusiasm, proving that education flourishes even in adversity.
The warmth of their welcome is indescribable. The school board, with overflowing generosity, prepared a wood-fired meal: corn, potatoes, and succulent roast lamb. This simple gesture moved us deeply—not for the food itself, but for what it represented: hospitality, gratitude, and the unbreakable bonds of community.
The students proudly showcased their talents, singing in Quechua, reciting poetry, and sharing melodies played with care. It was a joyful celebration of reading, art, and culture.
This visit reaffirmed a core belief: in the most remote corners of the country, where roads fade and access seems impossible, children still dream of learning, and teachers labor daily to make those dreams real. Delivering books is not just logistics—it’s an act of faith in the transformative power of the written word.
We extend our deepest gratitude to:
The Torotoro District Education Department for their support and logistical coordination.
ConsPar (constructing a nearby dam) and Méndez & Co. (project supervisors) for assisting with transportation.
Don Arcenio, a La Madera community leader, who organized the parents’ reception and guided our donkey—laden with hope—to its destination.
We returned with far more than we brought. This experience fuels our resolve to keep walking, book in hand, toward even remoter communities. Wherever a child hungers for knowledge, a story should be waiting.
Reading is a right. Bringing it closer is our mission—one we embrace with humility and respect for all who fight, day after day, for equitable education.
